For those of you interested in genealogy... The Carriage House Genealogy Center, located behind the Lillian E. Jones Museum, is now open to the public on Wednesdays 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. (and additional hours by appointment). We have internet access to genealogy sites, bound volumes of Jackson County newspapers from the late 1870s to the early 1990s (not all years are available), copy machine, and more! We are always adding new books and reference materials to our collection, so if you have a genealogy question, this is a good place to begin looking for the answer.
Also, we are working on building computer databases with genealogical information, and we need volunteers to type the information into the computer. If you are willing to help us with this task, please let us know - you don’t have to be a fast typist; you just need to be willing to help out!
If you have old yearbooks sitting on shelves or in boxes just gathering dust, consider placing them in the Carriage House Genealogy Center so they will be available to those doing research. We currently have a small collection of yearbooks, but we would like to expand it. We are accepting yearbooks - of any year - from any of Jackson County’s schools. These make wonderful research tools!
The Carriage House is also accepting copies of specific family histories and other genealogy materials. Local histories, historical accounts, or anything with names, dates, and places that would help people in tracing their families would also be appropriate donations. Let us know if you have any of these types of materials that could be used in the research center! If you don’t want to give them as gifts, please consider placing them on loan for people to use when they come to the research center.
