Lillian E. Jones Museum: A Challenge
First, the house was to be painted. Bids were taken, and then it was discovered that because the museum was a government entity that prevailing wages had to be paid. This cost an extra $3000.
Advertised for bids for architectural services was done. The property had to be inspected and plans drawn up for the changes needed to meet state codes for public buildings.
Reasor, Valentour, and Callahan Architects from Athens were awarded the contract. They drew up plans and submitted them to the State Board of Industrial Relations for approval. Then hearings were scheduled with the State and the architects to discuss variances. Some of the changes that were made were adding a handicap ramp, a door to accommodate a wheelchair, new fixtures in the bathroom (these changes had to be made to comply with ADA requirements), basement sprinklers, new water lines, new wiring, and air conditioning.
The contract for these renovations was awarded to A. J. Stockmeister, Inc. Eventually all work was completed, the house was thoroughly cleaned, and we were ready to open. A grand opening celebration was on December 9, 1995.
